Window Energy Ratings Explained: Your A to G Guide

When replacing windows in Rochdale, Oldham or Greater Manchester you will see energy ratings displayed on double-glazed units. Understanding these ratings helps you choose windows that genuinely reduce your energy bills.

The Window Energy Rating System

Windows are rated from A++ (most efficient) down to G (least efficient) using the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) scheme. The rating accounts for the window's U-value (thermal transmittance), solar heat gain and air leakage.

What Is a U-Value?

The U-value measures how effectively a window retains heat. The lower the U-value the better the insulating performance. Modern double-glazed windows should achieve U-values of 1.4 W/m2K or lower. Triple glazing can achieve below 1.0 W/m2K.

What Rating Should You Aim For?

For most homes across Rochdale, Oldham and Greater Manchester, A or A+ rated windows represent excellent value and performance. We recommend A-rated double glazing as a minimum for all new installations. See our guide on improving your home's energy efficiency with new glazing and whether new windows add value to your home.
